Histograms: Number of Classes & Sturge’s Formula

Histograms are meant to summarize interval data, but…

  • Histograms with too many class intervals don’t summarize the data enough for a clear visualization
  • Histograms with too few class intervals oversummarize the data, and so some details of the distribution may be lost

Sturges’s formula can be used to give the ideal number of class intervals for a set of data

Sturges’s formula:

Number of classes = 1 + 3.3 log (n)
