Expected Value (Q2d)

Time for the tabular approach to finding the expected value of x. In other words, I use a table to keep track of my calculations.

Remember to make use of the order of operations:

  1. (B)rackets … (no operations within brackets here)
  2. (E)xponents … (no exponents here)
  3. (D)ivision … (no division here)
  4. (M)ultiplication … Multiply each x by its corresponding P(x)
  5. (A)ddition … Add up each xP(x) in the column to get ∑xP(x)
  6. (S)ubtraction … (no subtraction here)

NOTE: The order of division and multiplication can be switched, as well as addition and subtraction

ALSO NOTE: This order is sometimes expressed as P.E.M.D.A.S.

  1. (P)arentheses
  2. (E)xponents
  3. (M)ultiplication
  4. (D)ivision
  5. (A)ddition
  6. (S)ubtraction
